Braking ratio

The braking ratio is a percentage for evaluating the braking ability of a railway vehicle or a train .

The braking ratio is a quotient of the braked weight of a vehicle or train and its actual mass (weight). This enables the braking performance of different trains with their different loads to be compared with one another. The braking ratio is used by the Swiss railways to determine the train speed .

The brake series and the train series are then determined from the braking ratio . The train speed, which is determined with the route table, depends on this .

With the same braking ratio and the same type of braking , different vehicles or trains have the same braking distance when braking quickly from the same speed .

Partial braking ratio

Addresses on a standard car I of the RhB with 16 t braked and 18.8 t total weight. Its braking ratio is 85%.

The partial braking ratio guarantees a braking effect on Swiss railways in order to bring the individual train parts safely to a standstill in the event of a train separation and to prevent them from escaping.

If all vehicles in a train are braked, the partial braking ratio does not need to be checked. Otherwise the partial braking ratio from the end of the train and the tip of the train to the possible separation points must be calculated.

From the end of the train, the lowest partial braking ratio is 61%. This means that a gradient of up to 44 ‰ can be negotiated.

Calculated from the front, the lowest partial braking ratio is 18%, which means that a gradient of 7 ‰ can still be negotiated.
