Brennisteinsalda is the name of an 855 meter high volcano in the south of Iceland , which belongs to the volcanic system of Torfajökull . The mountain is about 3 km from Landmannalaugar and is in the municipality of Rangárþing ytra .
Volcanism
The Brennisteinsalda is a rhyolitic lava dome that is part of the rim of the caldera of the Torfajökull central volcano .
The mountain rightly bears its name Schwefelwelle (German translation of the Icelandic Brennisteinsalda). Sulfur deposits have colored the slopes yellowish. On the other hand, it has an astonishing mix of other colors, which come about through a variety of influences: green ( moss ), pink ( iron precipitation ) and beige (rhyolite), gray, blue and black ( basalt rock , pitch stone and ash deposits) and white ( lime deposits ). It is not for nothing that it adorns numerous photos of Landmannalaugar, a nature reserve near the Hekla .
As the mountain is part of the caldera rim of the active central Torfajökull volcano, there is a high temperature area at its feet . On its slopes the earth is still hot in places, there is steam and smoke.
During the last series of eruptions in Torfajökull towards the end of the 15th century, the Laugahraun obsidian lava field arose from its flank .
Hiking on the mountain
If you want to pass the mountain from the hut in Landmannalaugar on Laugavegur , you first cross the extensive obsidian lava field.
In the mud pots and fumaroles on the mountain and below the mountain, you should avoid the white spots (calcium deposits) so as not to break in, as the earth's crust is particularly thin below them.
