Brent Birckhead

Brent "Ivory" Birckhead (born July 11, 1985 in Baltimore ) is an American jazz musician ( alto saxophone , also soprano saxophone ) of modern jazz and a university teacher.

Live and act

Birckhead was educated at Howard University , where he earned both a bachelor's and master's degree, and was recognized as an instrumental jazz soloist by Down Beat Magazine at the annual Student Music Awards and best alto saxophonist by the Washington City Paper in 2011 . His first recordings were made in 2004 when he was a member of the Howard University Jazz Ensemble ( Grace Notes - HUJE 2004 ). In his hometown he worked with artists such as Lauryn Hill , Nas, Wale, Eric Benet, Larry Graham and George Duke . In 2019 he released a self-titled debut album with a sextet on the Revive Music and Ivory labels . Currently (2019) he leads the Brent Birckhead Quartet , which includes Mark G. Meadows (piano), Jonathan Michel (bass) and Curtis Nowosad (drums); Furthermore, he plays in Dubtet by Corey Wallace . In the field of jazz, he was involved in nine recording sessions between 2004 and 2014, including a. with the Todd Marcus Jazz Orchestra, also with Mark G. Meadows ( Somethin 'Good ). Birckhead is Professor of Saxophone at Morgan State University in Baltimore. He currently lives in New York City.
