The French ship Bretagne had 110 cannons and thus belonged to the first rank of a ship of the line . Brittany was later renamed the Révolutionnaire .

The Brittany was to increase one of 17 ships of the line, the campaign Choiseul were ordered in 1762 as a result of the Duc de raise funds for the navy from the cities and provinces of France. The Brittany fought in the Battle of Ushant in 1778 as a flagship of the Comte d'Orvilliers . During the French Revolution , Brittany was renamed the Révolutionnaire . On May 28, 1794, a French fleet, including the Révolutionnaire , met an English fleet under the command of Villaret-Joyeuses . The Révolutionnaire was under the command of Captain Vandangel. During the battle, the Révolutionnaire lost its entire mizzenmast and then fought bitterly against the English 74-gun ship HMS Audacious . The English ship of the line came to the rescue and the Révolutionnaire was completely dismasted by the combined forces . Since the three English ships could not deliver the French one, they left him. The next day the Révolutionnaire was towed to Brest by a French frigate . After several days, the weakened French fleet had to withdraw.
