Pretzel (heraldry)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The pretzel , depending on the dialect also pretzel or Prezel is in the Heraldry a common figure .

The baked goods are shown in the coat of arms in the typical heraldic colors and metals . In the coat of arms , the location is differentiated by the direction of the pretzel knot. If this points to the base of the shield , the pretzel is reported as fallen . The baking shovel, the slide or the shooter, and / or a small number of rolls are rarely provided with the pretzel. The pretzel can also be present in the upper coat of arms (for example the Beck family). It is then mainly a matter of repeating the contents of the sign.

The coat of arms has been known as a guild symbol for bakers since around the 14th century. Decorative shields or blacksmith coats of arms on facades showing the pretzel decorate the craftsman's house.

The coat of arms is also often used as a talking coat of arms for the bearers with the family names Beck , Bäcker , Becker or Beckers .
