Brian Greenhoff (born April 28, 1953 in Barnsley , † May 22, 2013 in Rochdale ) was an English football player .

Career

Since Greenhoff was born in Barnsley, he played for the Yorkshire Schoolboys in his early youth. In August 1968 he went to Manchester United as a youth player , where he became a professional footballer. On September 8, 1973, he completed his first competitive game for the senior team from Manchester United against Ipswich Town . In 1977 he won the FA Cup with the team ; at that time he played with Martin Buchan in central defense.

Greenhoff was a very flexible player who started his career as a midfielder and ended as a central defender of international class. In total, Greenhoff scored 17 goals in 271 competitive games for Manchester.

His brother Jimmy also played for Manchester United. In 1979 Greenhoff moved to Leeds United for £ 350,000 and left the club in 1983 for Rovaniemen Palloseura , Finland .

Between 1983 and 1984 he was a trainer at Rochdale AFC , where his brother was manager at the same time. In 1984 the brothers let their contracts with Rochdale dissolve.

English national football team

Between 1976 and 1980 Greenhoff played 18 times for the senior national team and once for the B national team. His national appearances were goalless.
