Rovaniemi PS (officially: Rovaniemen Palloseura or RoPS for short ) is a Finnish football club in Rovaniemi , Province of Lapland , which has played in the top division, the Veikkausliiga , since the 2013 season .
history
In 1950 the association was founded under its current name. In 1981 the first promotion to the then Mestaruussarja was the highest Finnish league. But tenth place was not enough to keep the league and RoPS played second class for another year before the long period of first class began in 1983, which only ended in 2001 with relegation to the Ykkönen .
During the time in the Mestaruussarja and later in the Veikkausliiga, RoPS had its sporting climax in the late 1980s. In 1988 and 1989 , the team took third place. In addition, RoPS won the 1986 cup and took part in the 1987/88 European Cup Winners' Cup. There RoPS only failed in the quarterfinals at Olympique Marseille . In the season 1989/90 Rovaniemi PS took part in the UEFA Cup and prevailed in the first round against GKS Kattowitz and was eliminated in the second round against AJ Auxerre . In the following season, Rovaniemi PS was eliminated in the first round against 1. FC Magdeburg . In 1996 RoPS was in the final of the Finnish League Cup , but lost 3-2 to HJK Helsinki .
In the 1990s, the team belonged to the midfield and always placed between 5th and 8th place. From 2000 it went downhill. 2001 the team had to relegate for the first time as bottom of the table. Since then, RoPS has increasingly become what is known as an “elevator team”. After lamenting three more relegations in 2005 , 2009 and 2011 and celebrating four climbs (2003, 2007, 2010, 2012), they have been playing in the Veikkausliiga again since 2013. In 2013, Rovaniemi PS won the Finnish Cup for the second time, taking part in the UEFA Europa League in the 2014/15 season . In the 2015 season , the best result so far was achieved with the runner-up.
