From 1973 to 1978 von Rechenberg studied veterinary medicine at the University of Zurich (UZH) and received his doctorate in 1978 with a thesis on surgical joint stabilization. This was followed by employment as a research assistant at the University of Pennsylvania and in 1986 the license to practice medicine as a veterinarian while working for the small animal clinic in Würzburg. research

Von Rechenberg is a recognized expert in small and farm animal surgery. The focus of her research is on the replacement and remodeling of bone and cartilage tissue . In particular, she investigated the possibilities of osteochondral transplantation . In the field of bone and cartilage replacement, she studied areas of application of various biomaterials in connection with basic mechanisms of cell signaling and the interrelationships between bone breakdown and formation. For her research on the use of bone welding in orthopedic surgery, the Swiss Innovation Promotion Agency (KTI / CTI) presented her with the Medtech Award in 2005. In addition, von Rechenberg and her MRSU research group received the "Charles S. Neer Award" from the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons in 2007.
