BritNed

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

BritNed is a submarine cable , the United Kingdom and the Netherlands combines. For technical reasons, the connection is operated as a high-voltage direct current transmission (HVDC). The converter stations are located in the southeast of England on the Isle of Grain in Kent ( Lage ) and in Maasvlakte ( Lage ), which belongs to Rotterdam .

Construction and commissioning

The project was announced in 2007, construction work began in autumn 2009 and was completed at the end of 2010. Commercial operation began in April 2011. The construction costs were around 600 million euros.

The converter stations were built by Siemens , the cables come from ABB .

technical description

The connection bridges a distance of 260 km. It consists of two parallel submarine cables and can transmit a power of 1  GW . The bipolar voltage is ± 450  kV .

Operation with direct current is necessary for several reasons: firstly, with alternating current operation, the line losses would be too high in view of the length, and secondly, the interconnected grids of Great Britain and mainland Europe are not synchronized .

power plant

BritNed is operated by the transmission system operators National Grid and Tennet .

The purpose of the system is to better connect the European power grids with one another. This became necessary because the progressive switch to power generation in wind turbines and photovoltaic systems makes the supply increasingly susceptible to fluctuations. The coupling of power grids enables a supraregional exchange of electrical power, whereby the irregularities of the wind power feed steady and thus z. T. can be compensated.
