Anna Britta Troelsgaard Nielsen (born May 28, 1954 ) is a clerk at the Danish Social Insurance Agency who was sentenced to six years in prison for embezzling 120 million Danish kroner (16 million euros) after she was arrested in South Africa.

Due to the amount and international ties to South Africa, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden, the case attracted attention in the global press.

From 1977 to 2018 she worked in various functions in the Ministry of Social Affairs. Exactly 40 years after her appointment, on January 27, 2017 , she received the Fortjenstmedaljen silver medal from the Queen .

Social Security Agency fraud

It is believed that from 1993 to 2018 she transferred funds from the Danish Social Security Agency around 298 times by making up fictional projects and forging emails and a signature.

On September 25, 2018, she was reported to the police and released from her duties. This was followed by the flight to South Africa, after which Interpol was looking for her with an international arrest warrant.

She was arrested at a Johannesburg hotel on November 5, 2018 at 5:30 a.m. local time . After delivery to Denmark on November 10, along with her son Jimmy Jamil Hayat (* 1980), she was in Frederiksberg in custody .

accusation

Britta Nielsen was charged with grave data fraud; her son was also charged for accepting 3.6 million crowns from her. They then voluntarily continued their detention until the start of the trial on October 24, 2019.

With the money he bought u. a. half of the Thula Bush Estate in Kruger National Park - near his mother's house. There he invited the well-known Danish television comedian Anders Bircow one, chairman of Amway , a multi-level marketing company that successfully against a designation as a pyramid scheme resisted.

Her two daughters Karina Jamilla Hayat (* 1984) and Nadia Samina Hayat (* 1987), as well as son-in-law Kian Omid Mirzada (* 1981), were also indicted for serious stolen goods because they received large sums of money from Britta Nielsen. In Sweden land was bought, in Germany and the Netherlands up to 60 racehorses because the daughter was a show jumper.

process

Britta Nielsen quickly acknowledged her guilt, her defender Nima Nabipour tried to assert mitigating circumstances.

At one of the first hearings she said: “I was committed to introducing the NemKonto system [with us].” This would have made it difficult for her to continue cheating. When asked by her defense attorney, she explained: “I wanted to end my urge to take this money by getting out of there. I didn't want to do what I was doing. ”The system was not implemented for budget reasons.

The defense attorney argued that there was far too little control over the employees of the social security authority, so it was too easy for Britta Nielsen to cheat for several years.

On February 18, 2020, she was sentenced to 6.5 years in prison.

The Danish Shipping and Commercial Court declared her bankrupt ten days after she reported to the police. This meant, among other things, that the house on Hvidovre was confiscated. It was foreclosed in February 2019 for DKK 4,750,000. In 1986 the couple paid DKK 1,190,000 for the property.

Private life

Britta Nielsen is the daughter of the warehouse worker Jens Nielsen and the saleswoman Gerda Troelsgaard Nielsen.

In the mid- 1970s she met the Pakistani-born brewery employee Khursheed Hayat (* 1943). The couple married and had three children. The family had lived in a 174 m² villa in Hvidovre since 1986.

Khursheed Hayat was head of the night shift at Carlsberg in Taastrup until his sudden death on December 8, 2005.
