The Broad Meadow Brook Conservation Center and Wildlife Sanctuary is a 430  acres (1.7  km² ) large reserve in Worcester in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . It is administered by the Massachusetts Audubon Society .

Protected area

The Broad Meadow Brook Conservation Center & Wildlife Sanctuary, named after the river of the same name, is the largest urban nature reserve in New England . A trail network of 5  mi (8  km ) in length - 1 mi (1.6 km) of which is barrier-free - leads visitors to the most interesting areas. For example, art exhibitions take place there regularly. About 80 species of butterflies and 164 species of birds live in the protected area, and it also provides a habitat for more than 700 different plant species and a large number of animals. The main house also serves as a visitor center for the neighboring, from the National Park Service managed Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor .

Opened in 1991, the sanctuary was the Massachusetts Audubon Society's first to be located in an urban area. As early as 1989, the first 15 acres (6.1 ha) could be acquired, which have been continuously expanded over the years - partly on the basis of donations and donations. However, 137 acres (55.4 hectares) of the current reserve are owned by the utility National Grid , which is why an overhead line runs through the area, and 120 acres (48.6 hectares) belong to the City of Worcester. However, both parties have entered into a sanctuary and responsible management agreement with the Massachusetts Audubon Society.
