Broken English is a music album by Marianne Faithfull .
history
Broken English (1979) contains Marianne Faithfull's best-known pieces, which became her greatest single successes after her version of As Tears Go By (1964). Their previous albums were characterized by a gentle folk rock and country sound . With Broken English she suddenly presented songs that were based on the British New Wave , which was popular at the time . Her voice was now deeper and smokier than on her previous recordings. The cover shows Marianne Faithfull bathed in blue light. The right hand holds a burning cigarette, the glow of which has been colored pink. With her right arm she protects her eyes from the light so that they are in the shadow and cannot be seen. The album reached fourth place in the German album charts.

Broken English
The title song of the album is inspired by European, radical left-wing terrorism . The song reached 36th place in the German single charts in 1980.
The Ballad of Lucy Jordan
The song was originally written by Shel Silverstein for the band Dr. Hook posted. Dr. Hook had recorded the song in 1975 for the album of the same name. Lee Hazlewood recorded the song in 1976 for his album 20th Century Lee . The most famous version, however, comes from Marianne Faithfull, who celebrated her greatest single success with this song. In Germany, the single came to fifth place in the charts and stayed in the top ten for eleven weeks .
The song is about a 37-year-old American housewife who is disillusioned with suburban life. Realizing that her childhood dreams will never come true, she is plunged into a suicidal crisis. She had always dreamed of driving through Paris in an open sports car and feeling the warm summer wind in her hair. At the end of the song, her perception of reality is so disturbed that she experiences the ambulance transport to the psychiatry as a sports car ride through Paris.
The song has been used in films several times. The most famous example is the film Thelma & Louise .
A cover version of this piece in German exists under the title Heidi Bormann and can be found on the album Das Beste & Reste der Leipziger Folk -Band Folkländer .
