Morris Pert

Morris David Brough Pert (born September 8, 1947 in Arbroath , Angus , † April 27, 2010 in Balchrick , Kinlochbervie , Sutherland ) was a British composer and drummer . Between 1977 and 1979 he was a member of the band Brand X .

Life

Pert first studied music at Edinburgh University . After completing his bachelor's degree, he studied composition and percussion under Alan Bush at the Royal Academy of Music in London . While still a student at the Royal Academy, he was awarded the composer's prize of the Royal Philharmonic Society in 1970 for his orchestral piece Xumbu-Ata . He then worked for two years with the Japanese percussionist Stomu Yamashta . From the beginning of the 1970s he worked both as a composer, including regularly for the BBC , and as a studio musician in the field of pop and rock music . Between 1972 and 2009 he worked as a percussionist, drummer, keyboardist and arranger for artists such as Paul McCartney , Peter Gabriel , Phil Collins , Mike Oldfield and Kate Bush . In 1977, Billboard magazine named Pert fourth on the list of Best Jazz and Rock Drummers.

Pert composed three symphonies : The Rising of the Moon , The Beltane Rites and The Ancient Kindred . The latter premiered on German television in 1980 under the direction of Eberhard Schoener .

After Pert had finished work on his fifth album shortly before, he worked in his studio on his fourth symphony, De Situ Albanie . Because he didn't answer calls and doorbells, the police eventually opened his home. The officers found Pert dead.
