Kinlochbervie ( Scottish Gaelic Ceann Loch Biorbhaidh ) is a fishing port with around 500 inhabitants in the far northwest of the Highlands in the extremely sparsely populated Scottish county of Sutherland . The main economic factor is fishing. The fish auction hall at the port serves not only the local fishermen as a transshipment point for the fish that are landed . Kinlochbervie therefore has comparatively good road connections for transporting the fish in refrigerated trucks, which are otherwise often only single-lane in the area.
The second economic mainstay is tourism . There are numerous bed and breakfasts and holiday homes in the area.
To the north is the beach at Sandwood Bay . It is a seven-kilometer walk from a well-developed car park. Sandwood Bay is one of the largest sandy beaches in Sutherland . The freshwater lake Loch Sandwood is only separated from the beach by a narrow strip of dunes. The area around Sandwood Bay is owned by the John Muir Foundation and on this basis forms a nature reserve . Cape Wrath lies between Sandwood Bay and Durness . Since Cape Wrath lies within a military test area, hikes there should be coordinated with people who are familiar with the area. However, the beaches of Oldshoremore and Polin are quicker to get to.
