Bronisław Baczko (2005)

Bronisław Baczko (born June 13, 1924 in Warsaw , Poland ; † August 29, 2016 there ) was a philosopher , historian and author of Polish descent who was most recently a Swiss citizen.

Life

Baczko graduated from Warsaw University in 1957 with a Dr. phil. after he had already acquired the License des lettres there in 1953 . He was first assistant and later professor at the Philosophical Faculty of Warsaw University from 1952 to 1968. During these years he determined the thinking of a whole generation of Marxist intellectuals in Poland such as Leszek Kołakowski or Adam Schaff , the so-called Warsaw School . He was released for political reasons in connection with the March 1968 riots in Poland .

Baczko subsequently went into exile, first to France , where he taught at the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Clermont-Ferrand from 1969 to 1973 . From 1974 he was an adjunct professor of intellectual history and history at the University of Geneva , where he became a full professor from 1977 until his retirement in 1989. Since that year he has been an honorary professor at the University of Geneva. In 1990 he was visiting professor at the Collège de France . His research and publications since the time of his exile also dealt with the Enlightenment and the French Revolution .
