The film's spokesman was the historian David McCullough , who created the literary model for the film with his book The Great Bridge . Passages from the diaries and notes of the bridge engineer Washington Roebling were read out by the grandson Paul Roebling. Julie Harris read notes written by Washington's wife, Emily Warren Roebling , after she took over construction management due to her husband's illness.
