Bruce Karl Braswell

Bruce Karl Braswell (born October 8, 1933 in Berryville , Arkansas , † September 7, 2013 in Fayetteville , Arkansas) was an American classical philologist .

Bruce Karl Braswell studied Classical Philology at the University of Toronto ( MA 1961). He then published essays on ancient Greek and Latin as well as on Middle Latin literature. He deepened his studies at the University of Oxford , where he received his bachelor's degree in 1970 . He then taught and researched at the Free University of Berlin , where he completed his habilitation in 1977 and was appointed private lecturer. In 1978 he was awarded a D.Phil. PhD; in the same year he married the Swiss philologist Margarethe Billerbeck . In 1987 he went to the University of Friborg in Switzerland as a visiting professor , where he was active in teaching and research. He was a Senior Research Fellow.

Braswell's research focus was Pindar's odes , on which he has so far provided three individual comments and numerous studies. He also dealt with the ancient commentaries on Pindar and the reception of the poet in modern research. Hence his preoccupation with the ancient grammarians. Together with Margarethe Billerbeck, he edited an edition of the fragments and testimony of the grammarist Epaphroditos (2007); both also acted as editors of the Sapheneia series.
