The Brun Fourca red grape comes from France , where it is grown in the Provence and Languedoc regions . For example, it is approved in the palette appellation . The forested area is currently 25 hectares (as of 2008).

The late-ripening variety delivers low-alcohol wines of not very good quality, which are only used in blends with other varieties. The plantings were often replaced by the Carignan or Cinsault varieties . New plants of vineyards with Brun Fourca are not known.

The grape variety is also called Ribier. In France, however, there is also an independent grape variety Ribier that is not related.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is hairy like a cobweb and colored light green. The light green young leaves are almost hairless, shiny and spotted bronze.
  • The medium-sized, light green leaves are five-lobed and deeply indented (see also the article leaf shape ). The stem bay is closed. The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth are medium-sized compared to other grape varieties.
  • The cylindrical to conical grapes are medium-sized and have dense berries. The slightly oval berries are large and bluish-black in color. The berry pod is coated with a powdery layer of wax. The berries are juicy.

Brun Fourca ripens approx. 2 days after the Gutedel grape variety and thus belongs to the grape varieties of the late second ripening period (see the chapter in the article grape variety). It is still one of the early ripening varieties. She drives out late. Brun Fourca is very susceptible to downy mildew . Due to insufficient wood ripeness, the variety does not tolerate winter frost well.

Brun Fourca is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided. The vigorous variety produces consistently high yields.
