Bruno Etienne

Bruno Étienne (born 1937 in La Tronche , Isère ; died March 4, 2009 in Aix-en-Provence ) was a French sociologist, political analyst and a Freemasonist . He was a specialist in Algeria , Islam, and religious anthropology .

Life

He studied Arabic and political science at the Institut d'études politiques d'Aix-en-Provence and at the University of Tunis . Bruno Étienne was a researcher in Cairo and taught at the ENA of Algiers at the Faculty of Law in Algiers and at the Université Hassan II de Casablanca in Morocco and the Marmara University in Turkey . He was also director of research at the CNRS .

As a teacher at the Institut d'études politiques d'Aix-en-Provence , Bruno Étienne was the founder and director of the Observatoire du Religieux until 2006 . He was also a member of the Institut Universitaire de France . He coined the term “Islam de France” and was the initiator of the Islamic umbrella organization Conseil français du culte musulman . He founded a research school in Aix-en-Provence, which also includes Raphaël Liogier, Jocelyne Cesari and Frank Fregosi. Gilles Kepel was also under his influence.

He was a member of the Grand Orient de France and was a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor .

Bruno Étienne died of cancer. He is buried on the Cimetière Saint-Pierre in Aix-en-Provence.
