Life

Bruno Becker grew up in Grödig . He completed his Matura at the Bundesrealgymnasium Salzburg and entered St. Peter's Monastery in 1965. He made his solemn religious vows there in 1969. He was ordained a priest on June 29, 1971. At first he was a parish cooperator ( chaplain ) in Abtenau and in the Vienna district of Dornbach , then he was appointed pastor of the municipal parish of Mülln . From 1997 to 2003 he was prior of St. Peter, from spring 2002 to autumn 2003 director of pilgrimages in Maria Plain and in autumn 2003 he became pastor in Abtenau.

On March 27, 2009, under the electoral leadership of Abbot President Clemens Lashofer (head of the Austrian Benedictine Congregation ) from the Göttweig Monastery, he was elected by the 21 monks of the Archabbey for twelve years as Edmund Wagenhofer's successor as the 87th abbot and fifth archabbot of the monastery. The official inauguration was on April 24, 2009 and he received the benediction on May 16, 2009 by Archbishop Alois Kothgasser . His motto is: Vos date illis manducare - give them something to eat! On March 8, 2010, Archabbot Bruno admitted to having sexually abused a boy in Grödig ( Flachgau ) at the end of the 1960s . Becker offered his resignation, which was accepted on March 9, 2010. Victims and perpetrators confirm that it was a one-off attack before the ordination. In the meantime, there has been a reconciliation and material damage compensation between the victim and the perpetrator. Bruno Becker has been active as a pilgrimage pastor on the Sonntagberg ever since.
