Bruno Johannes Bruins (born July 10, 1963 in Arnhem ) is a Dutch politician of the VVD . From October 2017 to March 2020 he was Minister for Health Care in the Rutte III cabinet .

Career

From 1981 to 1990 Bruins studied law and administration at the University of Groningen . Bruins began his career with the regional transport operator Westnederland. He then became an advisor to the head of the transport department in The Hague . He then held several positions at the Hague public transport company , HTM Personenvervoer , until he became Head of Transport and Spatial Planning and Deputy Mayor of The Hague in 2000.

In 2006, Bruins was appointed State Secretary for Education, Culture and Science in the third Balkenende cabinet. As a result, he assumed the office of mayor in the municipality of Leidschendam-Voorburg and soon afterwards was commissioned by the Ministry of Transport as a representative for the Randstad agglomeration . In 2008 he returned to the private sector as a board member of the transport company Connexxion . He held this position until 2012. Bruins then took over the management of the UWV Employee Insurance Agency.

On October 26, 2017, Bruins was appointed Minister of Health in the third Rutte cabinet. During a live televised parliamentary debate on combating the coronavirus pandemic on March 18, 2020, Bruins collapsed at the lectern, which he attributed to "fatigue due to weeks of work" in a later statement. A day later the king granted him an honorable discharge at his own request. Health Minister Hugo de Jonge took on Bruins' duties related to the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

Private

Bruins lives in The Hague, is married and has three sons.
