Otto Bramm (born June 22, 1897 in Thorn, West Prussia , † March 23, 1986 in Bad Hersfeld ) was a German art historian and folklorist . He was curator at the State Museum for German Folklore in Berlin and employee at the Museum of the City of Bad Hersfeld.

Life

Otto Bramm was born on June 22, 1897 in Thorn, West Prussia . He studied art history , archeology , history and law , before the First World War at the University of Jena and between 1921 and 1926 at the University of Munich , where he also received his doctorate in 1927. From 1916 to 1920 Bramm did military service and then had to stay in a hospital. After completing his doctorate, he volunteered at the Bavarian National Museum in Munich in 1928 . In the following year he moved to Berlin, where he was initially a research assistant at the Gemäldegalerie and the Christian sculptures department of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin .

From 1929 to 1934 Bramm was a research assistant at the Collection for German Folklore, which was affiliated with the prehistoric department of the Völkerkundemuseum . From 1934 to 1945 he was curator of the collection, from 1935 on at the State Museums for German Folklore in the Association of State Museums in Berlin. As the only curator he was the deputy of the director Konrad Hahm , without this being connected with an official name. From 1941 to 1945 he did military service in World War II . When Hahm died in 1943, Bramm was probably nominally appointed acting director of the State Museum for German Folklore. Due to his absence due to the war, however, Oswald Adolf Erich was the longest-serving academic employee and was usually named as acting director in literature.

After the war he did odd jobs in Bad Hersfeld between 1946 and 1949 . From 1949 he worked at the Museum of the City of Bad Hersfeld. There he was also involved in various associations: from 1949 to 1975 he was chairman and board member of the Bad Hersfeld Cultural Association, from 1950 to 1986 a member of the Bad Hersfeld History Association, of which he was honorary chairman from 1967, and in 1951 a founding member of the Society of Friends of the Abbey Ruins in Bad Hersfeld, whose board member he was from 1954 and whose honorary membership he held from 1977. In addition, from 1952 Bramm was a member of the Heimatbund for Kurhessen, Waldeck and Upper Hesse and from 1955 in the working group for German house research. From 1964 Bramm was a participant and subsequently head of the excavations in the Bad Hersfeld monastery ruins ; From the following year he was a volunteer caretaker for soil antiquities in the Bad Hersfeld district. In 1977 he was awarded the Bad Hersfeld town plaque for cultural and historical merits.
