Bruno Kralowetz (born April 2, 1911 in Hainburg an der Donau ; † April 25, 2001 ) was an Austrian inventor and founder of the Society for Manufacturing Technology and Mechanical Engineering (GFM) in Steyr .

Life

Kralowetz grew up in Klagenfurt and began studying mechanical engineering in Vienna in 1928 , which he completed in 1933 as the first of 300 students in a minimum of nine semesters. In 1935 he was a graduate engineer in the Austrian Armed Forces . In 1945 he was released from the German Wehrmacht and set up a design office together with Kurt Ottitzky. In 1951 the Society for Manufacturing Technology and Mechanical Engineering (GFM) , which he founded, built a production hall in Steyr . In 1961, 26.5 percent of the machine tools sold abroad from Austria came from GFM.

As a nature lover, he decreed in his will that nothing may be changed in his place of residence in the local area of Ortisei until 15 years after his death.

Act

Kralowetz thus made an important contribution to rationalization, automation and process reliability and closed a gap in process engineering. His invention of "early robotics" revolutionized machine tool construction worldwide and was reflected in 51 patents. Shortly after the market launch, 60 percent of all wagon axles produced worldwide were manufactured on GFM forging machines. The possible uses of his inventions ranged from a small motorcycle crankshaft to large crankshafts for marine diesel engines . The use of the new forging machines brought about a six-fold acceleration in production in stainless steel plants compared to the processes that had been common up to that point.

Numerous domestic and foreign patents have been granted for Kralowetz's inventions, especially in the forging machine and crankshaft milling machine sector.

Awards

In 1965 Bruno Kralowetz was awarded a doctorate in technical sciences honoris causa at the Vienna University of Technology . In 1973 he received the Wilhelm Exner Medal in recognition of his achievements . On November 7, 1975 Kralowetz was awarded the Ring of Honor of the City of Steyr .
