Nipple stimulation

Oral stimulation of a nipple

Nipple stimulation is a widespread sexual practice that is often used in conjunction with other practices, but also on its own. It can be practiced by - and to - people of both sexes and any sexual orientation , but is predominantly used by women. Stimulating the female breasts and nipples is a practice found almost everywhere, while nipple stimulation is less common in men.

Nipple stimulation can be used as part of pre- intercourse foreplay designed to induce sexual arousal , or it can be practiced as a form of petting for its own sake, especially in adolescents and young adults . A survey conducted among 17 to 29 year old students in 2006 showed that around 82% of women and 52% of men are aroused by nipple stimulation, while around 7.5% of both sexes found it to be the opposite of Arousal detrimental.

Touching another person's nipples is usually a sign of great intimacy , and allowing such touch is usually a vote of confidence .

Nipples in men and women

Manual stimulation of a nipple

The breast, nipple, and atrium develop in much the same way in female and male fetuses and in childhood. During puberty, however, the breast remains rudimentary in boys, while it is more pronounced in girls, which is largely due to the influence of the hormones progesterone and estrogen . The female breast is often more sensitive because it has more nerves. Every breast, regardless of its size, has the same number of nerve endings. Accordingly, small breasts are usually more sensitive, while larger breasts can be stimulated more intensely without causing pain.

The breast and especially the nipples are erogenous zones with increased excitability in both sexes , which can vary very quickly and very strongly from person to person. When touched, the nipple usually gets erect. An erection of the nipples with all the resulting physiological changes can also occur spontaneously (i.e. without intentional stimulation), for example as a result of sexual arousal, during breastfeeding or as a cold reflex. It is not caused by the erectile tissue , but rather by an involuntary contraction of the hair follicle muscles , a part of the smooth muscles that is controlled by the autonomic nervous system. Physiologically, it is therefore more similar to goose bumps than to an erection of the genitals .

Techniques of stimulation

Electrical stimulation of a nipple

The nipples can be stimulated orally, manually or with the help of objects, for example. Oral stimulation can be done by licking, sucking, gently biting (“nibbling”) or blowing on the nipples. Other types of stimulation are touching or rubbing with your hand or an object (usually soft). Stimulating one's own nipples with or without aids, both during sexual intercourse and during masturbation , is also common.

Suitable tools are, for. B. massage oils or feathers ; But there are also a variety of sex toys in specialist shops, such as suction devices that simulate sucking on the nipple ("nipple suckers"), clamps or small rubber rings that fit on the nipples. The use of such devices is often not entirely safe, because some of them inhibit blood circulation. The erotic electrostimulation in the chest area is considered dangerous because they interfere with the body's electrical signals and so for. B. Can cause cardiac arrhythmias . In general, the use of sex toys should be handled carefully and responsibly. It is essential to read the instructions for use carefully.

The strength of a stimulus that is still perceived as pleasant can vary greatly with the individual and with the degree of arousal. What is pleasant in one situation can be perceived as painful in the next. In the context of BDSM practices, the pain threshold can (and should) often be deliberately exceeded. As with all sexual practices, it is important to give your partner feedback or to pay attention to this feedback.

After an orgasm, the nipples can become very sensitive to touch, making further stimulation painful.

Physiological effects

The chemical structure of oxytocin

The stimulation of the nipples leads to an increased production of the hormones oxytocin and prolactin in women and can trigger a physiological reaction of the genitals ( lubrication , swelling of the labia ). Usually this is accompanied by increased sexual desire and a nipple erection, both of which lead to increased sensitivity to touch of the nipples. The neuropeptide oxytocin, known as the “cuddle hormone”, creates “feelings of motherhood” and has an anxiety-relieving effect, and it also strengthens partner relationships and trust. Prolactin creates sexual satisfaction after sexual activity.

Some women report having orgasm from nipple stimulation without other forms of sexual stimulation . It is believed that such breast orgasms are also due to oxytocin. However, a study from 2011 with the help of magnetic resonance imaging showed that the cortical area, which is connected to the female genitalia, is directly excited by stimulating the nipples.
