Brutal (Japanese: ブ ル ー タ ル , Burūtaru) is an experimental film by Takashi Hirose from 2017.

action

The film is divided into three parts:

Part 1: Man A man is shown how he tortures three women and then kills them with targeted stabs in the abdomen. When one of the women offers himself to him, he yells at her that nobody understands him. Then he kidnaps two more women and kills them, too, whereby one of the women is able to free herself and then dies all the more brutally.

Part 2: Woman A woman kills two men with targeted stabs in the abdomen. Then she goes to the park and there grabs her next victim, who turns out to be a yakuza contract killer who was set on her. She can defeat and kill him in battle.

Part 3: Man and Woman The man and the woman meet. They first fight each other and try to kill each other. In doing so, they undress and discover that they are very similar. Both of them had their genitals removed and sewn up. A bizarre love game begins in which the two continue to injure each other and which ends with the death of the man. The woman then gets up and leaves the apartment. In doing so, she notices movements in her stomach that imply that she is pregnant.

background

Brutal is Takashi Hirose's first feature-length film. The story is meant to be a twisted love story. The story is told through very brutal splatter scenes , whereby Hirose is not primarily concerned with violence, but rather with emotions. By using a filter, the digitally rotated video is underlaid with dirt that is reminiscent of American grindhouse films, while the actual film seems to be heavily inspired by the Guinea Pig film series .

The film marks the second collaboration between Hirose and the two actors Asami Sugiura and Butch, who both played the leading role in his short film Moratorium .

In German-speaking countries, the film was shown for the first time at the Japan Film Festival Hamburg 2019. This was followed by a DVD / Blu-Ray release on the Midori-Impuls label on September 6, 2019.

reception

Adam Symchuk wrote in his review for Asian Movie Pulse that the film managed to shock, but that the rest of the story had no real depth. In contrast, on the occasion of the screening at the Japan Filmfest Hamburg , Don Anelli emphasized the positive aspects of the film and described it as a “fascinating and unique horror film version of a romance”.
