Bryaninops refers to a genus of gobies (Gobiidae). They are small, only 1.5 to 5.5 centimeters long, that live in the coral reefs of the tropical Indo-Pacific , always camouflaged on corals. There are a total of ten species, the first wasdescribedas Chaenogobius erythrops in 1906. The genus Bryaninops was only established in 1959.

Way of life

Bryaninops goblets live closely tied to their host corals. The size of the coral determines the number of gobies living on it. Not yet sexually mature individual animals live on corals that are too small. Larger corals can inhabit three or four gobies. Groups of three consist of a couple and a juvenile or a single adult and two juveniles. Groups of four are always a pair with two not yet sexually mature fish. When they reach sexual maturity, all young animals are initially females and can later change their sex. Apparently it is also possible to change the sex back to the female.

Bryaninops goblets feed on zooplankton carried by the current to their host corals.

Reproduction

For reproduction, the gobies gnaw off the living tissue at one point on the coral and lay their eggs on the bare coral skeleton. This causes only minimal damage to larger corals. After the young have hatched, the tissue grows back. That seems to be the reason why couples only live in larger corals.
