Robert Blattner

Robert Garnett Blattner - also known as Buddy Blattner - (born February 8, 1920 in St. Louis , Missouri , † September 4, 2009 in Chesterfield , Missouri) was an American table tennis and baseball player . He became world champion in table tennis three times. He later worked as a sports reporter.

Career

At the age of 16 he won the doubles world championship for the first time with his compatriot James McClure at the 1936 World Cup in Prague . They defended this title in 1937 , where they also became world champions with the American team.

He then began his baseball career with the St. Louis Cardinals . From 1946 to 1948 he played for the San Francisco Giants , in 1949 for the Philadelphia Phillies .

After the end of his active career, Blattner worked as a sports reporter mainly in the field of baseball. In 1962 he founded the charitable organization "Buddy Fund" to support young people in the St. Louis area who grew up in difficult circumstances.

Because of his merits, Robert Blattner was inducted into the Hall of Fame of US Table Tennis in 1979 and into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 1980.

In 2009, Blattner died of lung cancer.
