Budokan (computer game)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Budokan - The Martial Spirit is a martial arts game by Electronic Arts that was released in 1989 for various platforms, initially for the Amiga , the Atari ST and DOS . Conversions for the Sega Mega Drive (1990), the Amstrad CPC , the Commodore 64 , MSX and the Sinclair ZX Spectrum followed . It was re-released for the Amiga in 1993 by Soft Price . The name of the game is borrowed from the Tokyo Nippon Budōkan martial arts hall built by Mamoru Yamada for the 1964 Summer Olympics .

action

The game environment consists of six buildings. In four of the Dōjōs you can choose between Jiyu-renshu (practice unit without an opponent) and Kumite. In the latter mode, three sparring partners are available for practicing the Far Eastern martial arts karate , kendō (sword fighting), (stick fighting) and nunchaku (fighting sticks). A special feature of the game is the evaluation of the fighting style after each training session by Tobiko-Sensei, the trainer .

As a single player, you can play against twelve opponents of increasing difficulty in Budōkan . You can choose from the four types of combat, whereby the opponents (in addition to those available to the player) also master other types of combat and hits. Another building is reserved for two-player mode. In some implementations, for example on the C64, the two-player mode has been deleted without replacement.

In addition to the usual energy display (“Stamina”), a rather unusual display for the energy of the universe (“Ki”) is also displayed on the game screen. In principle, this rewards a fighter's passivity.

Reviews

The trade press rated Budokan good, but not excellent (70 to 80% in the relevant magazines). First and foremost, the outstanding graphics were praised. The high number of available stroke variants was generally highlighted as positive, but considered too difficult for beginners. On the one hand, the late but good implementation on outdated systems such as the C64 and on the other hand, the fact that the graphic capabilities of the then advanced systems ( e.g. Sega Mega Drive ) were not fully used were criticized .

Trivia

  • The instructions for the game included a fable as an introduction. This describes a monk selling grain who has to keep increasing the price of his goods because too much of the grain is stolen . What is meant is the increase in the price of software due to black copies .
  • In addition to the description of the game, the instructions contain a detailed description of the philosophy of the martial arts contained in the game.
