The Aufbaugymnasium is an upper level form of a grammar school in Germany and Austria .

In Germany, the Aufbaugymnasium is a type of school that can be attended after completing secondary school (possibly with a qualification note for the upper level of the grammar school). It enables the acquisition of the knowledge of the second foreign language necessary for the Abitur .

In Austria, the Aufbaugymnasium (AG) and Aufbaurealgymnasium (ARG) is a purely upper level form of the general secondary school (AHS), which concludes with a matriculation examination and university entrance qualification ( Matura ). It corresponds to the upper level of the normal gymnasium in terms of the upper level secondary school (ORG).
The school form was set up on a trial basis in 1927 as a 5-year advanced school to enable students with compulsory schooling to qualify for university, and in 1934 it was introduced into the school system as a special form . Although there are only a few such schools, it was anchored in 1962 as a special form of the AHS . It has been a 4-year course since the late 1960s.
The peculiarity of the school type is that subjects such as foreign languages (except English) start from scratch, and therefore no special requirements are necessary, which should also enable beginners from other types of school to attend the upper school level.
