The Austrian federal administrative institution, known as the Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Culture ( BMBWK for short , Ministry of Education or the Ministry of the Future at the time ) was primarily responsible for the school system , scientific research and teaching (universities, university clinics, technical colleges; libraries), museums and the Monument protection .
The Ministry was created in 2000, in the first two months after the start of the Schüssel I government , through the restructuring of the Federal Ministry for Education and Cultural Affairs (BMUK) and the Federal Ministry for Science and Transport (BMWV).
In 2007, under the Gusenbauer government , it was divided into the Federal Ministry for Education, Art and Culture (BMUKK, Ministry of Education ) and the Federal Ministry for Science and Research (BMWF, Ministry of Science ).
It was a classic overall ministry of culture , as it had existed in Austria until 1970.
Federal Minister
At the time of the existence of this ministry, the Federal Minister was:
- Elisabeth Gehrer ( ÖVP )
She had been Minister of Education (for school education) since 1995, and then headed the combined Ministry of Education (for school and higher education).
After the National Council election in 2006 , in the run-up to the inauguration of the Federal Government Gusenbauer , Claudia Schmied (SPÖ) as Federal Minister-designate for Education, Art and Culture and Johannes Hahn as Federal Minister-designate for Science and Research were responsible for the again separate departments.
Competencies
The BMBWK was responsible for:
- School system
- School maintenance, school establishment and school leaving with the exception of school maintenance
- Education and training as well as service examination for teachers
- Participation of the federal government in matters of service law and the preparation of the position plans for state teachers (insofar as it does not fall within the scope of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management )
- Kindergarten and after-school care

- Science affairs (scientific research and teaching)
- Universities (including business management matters as well as matters relating to the cost sharing of the federal government in the construction, design and operation of university hospitals)
- Affairs of student advocacy and student grants and grants

- Institutions and research institutions (including the Austrian Academy of Sciences , Federal Geological Institute , Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics )

Later exercise of responsibilities
In 2007, when the Gusenbauer government took office , the entire Ministry of Education was separated again, and two special ministries for the two sectors were set up again with the Federal Ministry for Education, Art and Culture and the Federal Ministry for Science and Research . After the Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy was responsible for science and research from 2014 to 2018 , in 2018, with the accession of the Kurz I government , a new overall education ministry was created , albeit without culture, under the name of the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research .
