The Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research ( BMBWF for short ), also the Ministry of Education or Teaching , is the Federal Ministry of the Republic of Austria responsible for schools and universities .
history
The Ministry of Education is one of the oldest ministries in Austria. It was founded in the Empire in 1848 (Revolution) as the Imperial and Royal Ministry of Public Education and from 1849 was run in the Palais Rottal in Vienna as the Imperial and Royal Ministry of Cultus and Education . From 1867 (compensation) on, the Ministry was only responsible for Cisleithanien ; Transleithanien now regulated the matter independently. 1919–1923, at the beginning of the First Republic , the Ministry was linked to the Ministry of the Interior in a joint department, then the Ministry of Education became independent again and remained so in the Second Republic from 1945 onwards. On July 24, 1970, the science agendas in the Kreisky I federal government were spun off into the newly founded Ministry of Science . Only from 2000 to January 2007 there was again a total Ministry of Education together with cultural affairs in the federal governments Schüssel I and Schüssel II . On March 1, 2014, the Ministry of Education emerged from the Federal Ministry for Education, Art and Culture, and the women's agendas were taken over from the area of responsibility of the Federal Chancellery at that time . Until June 30, 2016, the name was Federal Ministry of Education and Women; on July 1, 2016, the agendas for women and equality were transferred to the Ministry of Health, now called the Federal Ministry of Health and Women (BMGF). In January 2018, an overall Ministry of Education was created again
