history

From the foundation to the renovation

The school was founded in 1853 as a secondary school with a mathematical and scientific focus. The first school building was the house where the Golden Roof is located. In 1854 the school moved to Boznerplatz (formerly Margaretenplatz). In 1876, students were turned away due to a lack of space, whereupon the school relocated to the former hospital on Adolf-Pichler-Platz (formerly the market square) in 1890 . At that time, the building was already in disrepair.

During the First World War , school operations were outsourced and the building on Adolf-Pichler-Platz was used as a military hospital . During the Second World War , school operations were also outsourced due to the bombing war.

As early as 1945, the BRG resumed operations as the first middle school. In 1962 the major school reform came into force, in the course of which the school was renamed "Bundesrealgymnasium Innsbruck". In May 1969, a parents' association was founded and a parent council was set up for the first time.

After years of delay, the long overdue renovation of the school was approved in 1986. School operations were relocated to Gumppstrasse during the construction work between 1989 and 1992.

School rush, modernization and spatial expansion

In 2003 the school celebrated the school's 150th anniversary with a ceremony in the city hall and a festival day.

The very high rush to the school led to an increase in the number of students and classes. Due to the lack of space, two classes had to be relocated to the old town in Schlossergasse for eleven years from the 2003/2004 school year until the end of the 2013/2014 school year. In the school years 2010/2011 and 2011/2012 the premises of the former post office on Adolf-Pichler-Platz were also used as a classroom.

In the 2010/2011 school year, the occupancy rate reached a historic high with a total of 35 classes and five Matura classes. The construction of the fifth grammar school in the Au brought noticeable relief, in the school years 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 there were four classes in each age group, making a total of 32.

Inner courtyard with new building

Since autumn 2014, the time of great lack of space at BRG Adolf-Pichler-Platz has been a thing of the past. In the summer of 2013, in the 2013/2014 school year and in the summer of 2014, a single-storey, bridge-like development to the south was realized in the previous inner courtyard according to the plans of the architect Axel Birnbaum. The newly acquired six classrooms not only replaced the two classrooms in Schlossergasse, but also created enough space for afternoon care (two large rooms), a kitchen and a lunch table. The roof areas of the building can be used as open spaces by the students. Two open-air classes have been set up on the roof of the south-facing multi-storey building. In addition, extensive adaptations were made to the old building: The special rooms for biology, physics, chemistry, art education and works, as well as the associated cabinets, were completely redesigned, as were the conference rooms, management and administration. All classrooms were given internet access, a teacher's computer and a projector. In total, the federal government invested around 6.9 million euros in the property owned by the city of Innsbruck for the new building, and another 1.6 million euros from the building budget of the state school board for Tyrol was invested in the old building. The new wing was officially opened on June 1, 2016.

The increasing rush to the Innsbruck high schools meant that the APP started with five first grades in the 2015/2016 to 2017/2018 school years. The total number of classes remained the same at 32. In the school year 2018/2019, for which there was a new registration record with 161 students, the APP started with six first grades; the total number of classes rose to 33 (21 lower grades, 12 upper grades). Two additional rooms in Schlossergasse were used again, and the school was given the right to use an abandoned apartment in the main building. In the 2019/20 school year, 34 classes will be taught on the APP (21 lower grades, 13 upper grades). The afternoon care was housed in the abandoned apartment on the 2nd floor. The number of classes in the lower and upper grades will remain unchanged in the 2020/21 school year.

Music class

In the 2000/2001 school year, two AHS lower grades with a musical focus were founded for the first time in cooperation with the Innsbruck Music School and the Tiroler Musikschulwerk . In the following years one or two new music classes were founded. In the 2017/2018 school year, the project was continued with one class in the upper school . In the 5th grade, the students submit a declaration of intent to attend the alternative compulsory subject of music education in the 7th and 8th grade, have relevant priorities in their project weeks and also appear at various school events. In addition, from 6th to 8th grade they can attend the elective subjects music education and "auditory communication" for a total of up to eight hours per week.

From computer to e-learning classes

EDP class on the BRG-APP

As a continuation of the notebook classes introduced in the 2001/2002 school year, a computer class was founded starting with the 2005/2006 school year and the former classroom of the notebook class was equipped with PCs . In the following school years, additional IT classes were set up, so that a class is now set up as an e-learning class in each of the upper grades (since the school year 2018/19), in which a computer workstation is available to all students.
