Wolfgang Mader (born February 21, 1965 in Innsbruck , Tyrol ) is an Austrian extreme athlete .

Life

Mader grew up with his parents Helmut and Edeltraud Mader in Innsbruck , Tyrol . He attended the Mariahilf elementary school from 1971 to 1975 and graduated from the Adolf Pichler Platz secondary school in 1983 . After graduating from high school and completing military service , Mader joined the Tyrolean hydropower plant in 1985 , where he has been head of the PR and communications department since 2001. From September 1997 to September 1999 Mader completed a degree in political science (Mag. Phil.) At the University of Innsbruck and obtained a doctorate in the same major in early 2001. His minor subjects were social psychology , pedagogy and journalism . In 1986 he married Ulrike, with whom he has three children.

Athletic career

In his youth, Mader was mainly active as a track and field athlete ( 100-meter and 200-meter run and long jump ) and in the sports of taekwondo and soccer . As a chess player he achieved several Tyrolean team championship titles from 1980 to 1982. During this time Mader experimented in various sports such as ice hockey , ski racing , climbing and tennis .

After a four-year sporty break due to the multiple stresses of work, family and studies, Mader got back into sport in 2001 and switched from the sprint disciplines to the long distance. From 2002 to 2006 Mader completed marathons in Florence , Prague , Vienna , Frankfurt and New York . He finished all runs in less than 3 hours and 30 minutes, his best time was 3 hours and 17 minutes in Prague 2004. Due to a chronic Achilles tendon and bursitis , Mader switched to racing bikes in 2006.

At the end of 2009, Mader decided, based on his experience in active cycling in the first three years, to switch to the better and more promising long distances and, subsequently, to the ultra-long distance races. In 2010 he took 3rd place with his racing bike in the Glocknerman ultramarathon and 5th place in the Swiss cycling marathon . With the victory in Bern, Mader qualified for the Race Across America . In June 2011 Mader had to cancel a solo charity project after 30 hours of driving and 13,000 meters of altitude due to the far too high risk of going downhill at night. On September 9-11 September 2011 (Friday - Sunday 12 noon) followed the official Guinness world record in the "most climbed meters in 48 hours": 25,346 meters in altitude through 46 ascents from Telfs to Mösern, each 551 meters in altitude on about 6 km ascent, i.e. 9, 2% average gradient of the ascent. This was broken on April 21, 2012 by compatriot Jacob Zurl .

On June 13, 2012, Wolfgang Mader stood at the start of the Race Across America 2012 in San Diego , California . He finished this in 16th place in a time of 11 days, 16 hours and 19 minutes. Mader is the third Tyrolean finisher after Hansjörg Franz (2000) and Franz Venier (2002). He was the 16th of 18 athletes who completed this race in 2012. 23 drivers gave up. In September 2013 he suffered a twisted thigh fracture that had to be operated on. In October 2013, he took part in the Crocodile Trophy mountain bike race in Australia. In 2014, he failed when trying to complete the Ötztal Cycle Marathon ten times in ten days .
