The colorful hollow tooth is an annual herbaceous plant that can reach heights of 50 to 100 centimeters. The stem is connected to the node ( Nodien significantly thickened) and stiff borstig hairy among the nodes. The leaves are ovate to ovate-lanceolate, pointed and serrated. The calyx is 12-17 mm long mostly with bristle-covered teeth and ribs or they are almost bare. The corolla is 22–34 mm long. While the middle corolla lobe of the lower lip is purple, often drawn with dark purple dots, the rest of the corolla is light yellow in color.

The flowering period is between June and October. Within the genus, the species is mainly characterized by the colorful corollas.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16.

Occurrence

The plant thrives in the temperate zone of Europe and Western Asia as far as Siberia in bushes, on the edges of forests and within deciduous forests, in riparian perennials, root crops, wet grassland fallow land and on corridors with fresh to alternately wet, nutrient-rich, base-rich sandy, loam and fens soils. The multicolored hollow tooth grows mainly in societies of the Polygono-Chenopodion association, but also in those of the class of corridors (Epilobietea angustifolii). Galeopsis speciosa is only more common regionally and can also be absent over long distances.

In the Allgäu Alps, the Bunte Hohlzahn on the southern slope of the Kegelkopf in Bavaria rises up to 1850 m above sea level.
