The buntrock ( Cyphostethus tristriatus ) is a bug (Heteroptera) from the family of the spiked bugs (Acanthosomatidae) and the only species of the genus Cyphostethus . It is conspicuous, usually intensely green in color and has a brownish red markings on the wing covers - similar to a suit jacket or vest - hence the German name Buntrock. The insect feeds on conifers such as the common juniper ( Juniperus communis ).

Distribution and way of life

Buntrock is widespread in northern, central and southern Europe, from the plains to the mountains. It is relatively common where its food plants are found. The adult animals and the larvae mainly colonize the common juniper ( Juniperus communis ) and other woody plants of the genus juniper ( Juniperus ), but also false cypresses ( Chamaecyparis ) and arborvitae ( Thuja ). They live in both dry and moist habitats such as dry grass , heather or moor . With their specially developed piercing-sucking mouthparts, the animals suckle the leaves and especially the fruits of the conifers in order to feed on their sap . The species overwinters in the adult stage. Adult specimens can be found from August to the next June, the larvae appear in July and August.

features

Colored skirt

The relatively flat animals reach body lengths between 8 and 10 millimeters. The body is elongated and narrows towards the back. The lower part of the abdomen is equipped with a forward-facing appendage at the base. The basic color of the body is usually intense green and littered with numerous, often grouped, colorless pits. The Clavus, the Cuneus and parts of the corium of the front wing ( Hemielytren ) and the rear edges of the throat plate (pronotum) are colored reddish brown, so that viewed from above, the appearance of a suit jacket or vest results. The fore wing membrane is membranous, translucent and has a dark pattern. The label ( scutellum ) is very large and brightly drawn at the corners and at the tip. The head is significantly longer than it is wide and narrows towards the front. The first member of the five-membered probe hardly reaches the tip. The tarsi are two-part. The compound eyes are very small and do not protrude spherically.
