Burchard von Stumpenhausen

Burchard von Stumpenhausen († 1231 ), often spelled Burghard and Stumpenhusen , was a cathedral provost in Bremen , who was elected archbishop of the archbishopric of Hamburg-Bremen in 1208 by the Hamburg cathedral chapter , but was never recognized by the pope.

Burchard came from a family of counts in Lower Saxony who owned Stumpenhausen Castle near Wietzen , had claimed the rank of a count for a few decades and probably died out with his death. From 1205 he was provost of the Bremen cathedral chapter. His choice fell at a time of the power struggle between the Guelphs and the Staufers , in which the cathedral chapters of Bremen and Hamburg were drawn into and reacted by changing sides several times. After the death of Archbishop Hartwich II on November 3, 1207, Waldemar , son of the Danish King Knut V and Bishop of Schleswig, was elected archbishop by the Bremen cathedral chapter, which was mostly Staufer-minded, but without asking the Hamburg canons were. The Hamburg Canon College, supported by some Bremen confreres, then proclaimed Burchard, a member of the Welfs, in April 1208 for the office. Burchard was invested by the Danish king , but the Pope did not confirm the election. Waldemar, who had barely been able to take possession of his archbishopric, was put off by Rome, even excommunicated and expelled from Bremen in 1209. The Pope called for a new election and so Burchard also renounced the bishopric. He only retained his post as provost until his death. In 1210, Gerhard , Bishop of Osnabrück and supporter of the Hohenstaufen dynasty, was elected as his rightful successor , now undisputed exclusively by the Bremen Cathedral Chapter .
