Viewpoints

The works of Garlichs have in common with the conceptual art of other artists that they are more accessible to the viewer if the artist's world of thought is known. Garlichs therefore tries to facilitate access to his works through texts in his own words on site and on his website:

Contemporary architecture, he criticizes, “is a homage to straight lines, a symbol of the laws of physics. It is proof of the technical possibilities that humans have created over time and it is the expression of a technoid worldview. It is an expression of the ability of humans to logically abstract at the lowest level. [...] The architecture is a hymn to the rectangle. [...] Without really noticing it, we are in right-angled parallel reality. The constant perception of straight lines, parallels and right angles leads to straight, parallel, right-angled thinking. [...] We live within mathematical principles. The human-made living environment is the stage set for mathematics. No other picture illustrates this better than Jesus, nailed to the cross. "

He attributes this peculiarity to social systems: “In order for these systems to function optimally, they must not be perceived as such. Where systems are used to make society work, they must be subtle. Subtlety is created by creeping, barely perceptible movement. ”He thinks:“ Art can expose subtle systems by ignoring or exaggerating them. ”But“ even subversive artistic actions take place within the framework of the law. The discussion about architecture with its symbolic dominance no longer takes place. The applied, the design, the mention of which in the context of an artistic work is considered the worst insult among artists, plays no role in the discussion about architecture. Art, playing with perception, largely ignores urban reality. [...] Progress is the visualization of utopias. Utopia control is in the hands of capital [...] Through state-sponsored institutions, politics and society are able to control cultural events. The rest of the work is done by the art market, in other words capital, which is the source of motivation for any democratic, capitalist society anyway. "
