Burg-Kauper , in Lower Sorbian Kupaŕske Bórkowy , is part of the municipality of Burg (Spreewald) in Brandenburg , located in the Spreewald .

Burg-Kauper, like the castle colony adjoining it to the south , is laid out in the unusual form of a scattered settlement . The entire place, which extends north and northwest of Burg-Dorf, consists of individual farmsteads. The place is crossed by various arms of the Spree , which in the past served as the only traffic artery. Today the village can also be reached by land. The Gurkenradweg leads through the village . Burg-Kauper belongs to the traditional Sorbian settlement area . In 1995, 15.7% of the population spoke Lower Sorbian; 7.1% were active speakers.

history

The first written mention of the place as an independent municipality took place in 1725. The place name Kauper goes back to the Sorbian Kupa (dt. = Island). In fact, in the course of time, the somewhat elevated Kaupen were settled in the otherwise impassable area crossed by the arms of the Spree. As in Burg-Kolonie, settlers were settled in Burg-Kauper by the Prussian state in the second half of the 18th century to make the area arable. In 1852 there were 1390 inhabitants in Burg-Kauper. Mathes Selleng has been handed down as a village mayor at this time . At this point in time, the town already had its own school. A second was later built on the Weiden 8 property . For the year 1852 there were eleven cattle, poultry and groceries in Burg-Kauper a butcher. In 1960, Burg-Kauper, like Burg-Kolonie, was incorporated into Burg-Dorf.

Personalities

The Protestant pastor and victim of National Socialism Johannes Noack (1873–1942) and the politician Heinrich Fischer (1890–1946) were born in Burg-Kauper .
