The Gurken-Radweg is a round tour of around 250 kilometers in Brandenburg through the Brandenburg wetland Spreewald . It owes its name to the Spreewald gherkins , a culinary delicacy that Theodor Fontane found at the top of regional agricultural products on his hikes through the Mark Brandenburg in the 1870s.

landscape

Most of the cycle path leads through the Spreewald biosphere reserve and thus through a cultural landscape of international importance. The landscape is characterized by almost three hundred streams , to which the course of the Spree branches out over an area of approx. 500 km². Extensive, moisture-loving alder forests have formed on the marshy soils , which, even in their remaining stocks, are among the largest in Central Europe. White storks , cranes and sea eagles can be seen in the Spreewald. Bilingual place name signs refer to the Sorbian culture with its own customs, costumes and language.

In 2001 the cycle path was awarded the tourism prize of the State of Brandenburg, which was awarded for the first time this year .

Route and accommodations

The route, which is around 250 kilometers long, leads through the larger towns of Lübbenau , Lübben (Spreewald) and Cottbus in Niederlausitz , all of which are served by the train . Other possible starting points with train stations are Vetschau and Peitz . Since the circuit touches twice, at Lübben and Burg , the entire route can be divided into three individual circuits. The route has no significant gradients and is mostly of good quality. In a few places there are unpaved roads (e.g. short sandy forest paths that are very difficult to drive on in dry conditions). Many hotels, inns and guesthouses along the route have adapted to cyclists and offer various special services as well as overnight stays for one night.
