History and layout
The Niederungsburg, built in the 12th century by Count Werner I von Bolanden as ancestral seat, was first mentioned around 1184 as castrum Bolant , later came into the possession of the Counts of Leiningen and was destroyed and / or abandoned in the 14th century.
The remains of the Niederungsburg , built as a motte, showed after excavations in 1907–1908 a square fence with rounded corners. The castle hill had a diameter of 55 m, a rectangular residential tower about 9 × 6.5 meters, the castle courtyard about 18 × 18 meters and another rectangular building (residential building) a floor area of about 5.5 × 12 meters.
