history

The castle was started in 1398 by order of the Grand Master Konrad von Jungingen and completed in 1405 under his successor Ulrich von Jungingen . During the Thirteen Years' War , the Polish King Casimir the Jagiellon was able to secure control of the castle, who transferred it to the Dukes of Pomerania-Wolgast as part of the Lauenburg and Bütow regions. In 1656 the castle was badly damaged by the Swedes in the Swedish-Polish War .

In 1657, due to the Treaty of Bromberg , it was placed under the rule of the Margrave of Brandenburg as part of the Lauenburg and Bütow regions and served as the seat of judicial and financial authorities and storage room.

In 1930 a youth hostel was established. The renovation work was interrupted by the Second World War and resumed by Poland in the 1960s. From March to June 1945 the Soviet NKVD used the castle as a warehouse; 20 to 40 people died every day from malnutrition and abuse. Today the building serves as a library , museum and hotel .
