The Castle Hill was originally a moated castle from the 12th century. It is located on the northeastern edge of the Eifel in Mechernich ( Berg district ) in the Euskirchen district and consists of a detached castle house with a tower and a former outer bailey to the northeast .
history
The castle and municipality of Berg are mentioned as early as 699. This year, St. Willibrord received the "villa" Berg from Irmina von Oeren, a relative of the Carolingian house , as a gift.
Below today's Niederungsburg there are probably remains of the old castle from the late 9th century as a hill in the valley. It served as a refuge and shelter against possible attacks on the two historic streets that met here . In the 14th century, the noble family von Berg settled there, and they expanded the castle and land into a knight's seat. In the 18th century, the castle became the property of Baron Clemens August von Syberg zu Eicks and has served as a leasehold ever since.
