Burgliebenau Castle

The castle Burgliebenau is a former moated castle and later castle in the district Burgliebenau , Gutshof 3–4, the community of Schkopau in the Saalekreis ( Saxony-Anhalt ). In the local register of monuments it is recorded as a monument under registration number 094 20686 .

history

The palace and estate complex, originally founded as a moated castle towards the end of the 12th century, was built to secure a river crossing over the White Elster and was owned by the Knights of Liebenau. In the possession of the bishops and dukes of Merseburg, the castle was mentioned in 1356, after the male line of the family died out at the end of the 13th century. In the first third of the 16th century, the main building was converted into a castle. Since a reconstruction took place under Duke Christian von Sachsen-Merseburg in 1687 , it is assumed that the castle was damaged during the Thirty Years War . Here, the old one was keep removed and the conversion carried out further to the castle.

From 1838 until it was expropriated during the land reform in the Soviet occupation zone in 1945, the castle was owned by the Schwarzburger family. After that, the castle complex was used by the LPG , a school kitchen and a kindergarten. Apartments for up to 11 families have been set up in one part of the castle. After that, the facility was owned by the municipality of Schkopau and in 2016 it was again privately owned.

description

The two-storey main building with a spiral staircase of the four-sided complex is located in the south and another single-storey wing is in the west. The coat of arms of Merseburg bishop Vinzenz von Schleinitz from 1530 is attached to the facade. In the passage there is a pointed arched door and a relief of the bishop's coat of arms. The castle complex is bounded in the north and east by an enclosure wall.

A small chapel , first mentioned in 1433, belonged to the castle complex.
