The Dieppe Castle ( French Château de Dieppe ) is a hilltop castle in the town of Dieppe in the Seine-Maritime , in the Normandy in northern France is. The present complex was built in 1435 30 meters above the cliffs of the English Channel coast to protect the city of Dieppe by Charles des Marets on the remains of an old castle.

meaning

The Norman-English rulers Heinrich II , Richard the Lionheart had fortified this place as early as 1188 . 1195 this first attachment was from Philippe Auguste of his time King of France from the dynasty of the Capetian during the turbulent disputes with the Plantagenets and the " Angevin Empire destroyed".

At the beginning of the 15th century, the place was again the focus of the last battles between France and England. The Dauphin , who later became King Louis XI. , defeated the siege troops under Talbot in 1443 at the age of twenty .

The city walls and the mighty west tower date from around 1360. After the liberation of the city, Marets received permission to build a castle with a square floor plan surrounded by four round towers and an adjoining courtyard. Two of the fortification towers are on the lake side. The stones are built up in threefold alternation, one layer each of house stone , brick and flint . Magnificent gilded paneling has been preserved in the interiors that now house the Dieppe Museum .
