Drove Castle (North Rhine-Westphalia)
Drove Castle

The castle Drove is in Drove , in the municipality of Kreuzau in Düren , North Rhine-Westphalia .

The old castle

The first known landlord of Drove was Reinhard von Drove, mentioned in 1239. The old castle , a moth, was in the immediate vicinity, southeast of the church. Today only a hill surrounded by ditches can be seen.

The new castle

The von Rohe family built the new Drove moated castle from 1728 to 1741 , which is still there today. This is a three-winged, two-story facility in the style of the Baroque from rubble with hipped roofs . In front of the manor house is a former three-winged outer bailey , which has only been single-winged since a major fire in 1893. Around 1920, a single-storey extension was added to the south-east and south-west corners of the manor house. The servants' house in the inner courtyard of the castle dates from 1929. The annex on the south-west corner of the manor house was so thoroughly destroyed during World War II that it was no longer rebuilt. The other war damage was removed. Today the castle is privately owned and inhabited.

The Drove cycle

Heinrich Nauen: Bathing women from the Drove cycle, today Kaiser Wilhelm Museum, Krefeld

Heinrich Nauen created a monumental cycle of paintings for Drove Castle over the years. Nauen had received the order for this from the Aachen art historian Edwin Suermondt in 1912 . From 1912 to 1913 the artist was busy with the execution of six large-format canvases, which are considered to be his main expressionist work.
