Janowiec Castle

The ruins of Janowiec Castle ( Zamek w Janowcu ) are located in Janowiec , a municipality in the Powiat Puławski in the Lublin Voivodeship , Poland .

location

The castle ruins are the remains of a hilltop castle in a spur location that rose above the Vistula . The village of Janowiec, seat of a rural community, is located 15 kilometers south of the town of Puławy .

history

The castle was first mentioned in 1537. It was probably built by Mikołaj Firlej at the beginning of the sixteenth century and expanded by his son Piotr ( Voivode of Ruthenian Voivodeship ) and his grandson Andrzej. Under Andrzej, the important architect Santi Gucci built the complex from 1565–1585 in the Renaissance style . The castle was destroyed by the Swedes under King Charles X Gustav during the Swedish Flood in 1655.

All attempts to rebuild the extensive castle got stuck in the beginning. In 1928 the Warsaw archaeologist Leon Kozłowski acquired the castle. His reconstruction plans were stopped by World War II. Kozłowski remained the owner even during the socialist era , as the state had no interest in the property. In 1975 the castle was bought by the Nadwiślańskie Museum in Kazimierz Dolny . The building has been renovated since 1988. The concept is to leave a substantial part of the building as a ruin, while the other part is to be meticulously restored.

The castle is open for tours and special events.
