Kagenfels Castle

The castle Kagenfels (french. Château du Kagenfels, also Homburgweiler- or hemp Matter castle called) is a castle near the village of Ottrott in the region Grand Est in France . Today only ruins remain of the castle .

Description of the ruins

Originally, Kagenfels Castle was a complex with a residential tower and keep. Remains of the surrounding walls and tower are still preserved today, and the former moat is also still recognizable. The residential tower had a footprint of 13.8 × 15.5 meters, the walls were about 1.5 meters thick.

history

Construction of the castle began in 1262 by the episcopal ministerial Albrecht Kage, on behalf of Walter von Geroldseck , the bishop of Strasbourg . At the time, he was at war with the city of Strasbourg . The building was not legalized until 1289 by the Roman-German King Rudolf I of the House of Habsburg . It is not known exactly how long the Kage family subsequently owned the castle.

During the 14th century the castle changed hands several times, including Albrecht von Schoenau and Friedrich von Stahel von Westhoffen. In 1424 Burg Kagenfels finally became a fiefdom of the Bishop of Strasbourg. In the history of the castle, four different sieges within 40 years (1383, 1390, 1397 and 1424) have been documented, some of which were heavy siege guns .

In 1406, several buildings were destroyed in a fire caused by an accident at a servants' bathroom. Heinrich von Hohenstein , Vitztum of the Bishop of Strasbourg, acquired the heavily damaged castle around 20 years later and had extensive renovation work carried out, for which a sawmill had to be built nearby . After his death in 1451, the castle served as a base for raids in the area under his son Anton.

In 1559 Kagenfels Castle was sold to Lucas von Visebock, Vogt of the manor of Weiler , who then took on the nickname "zu Kagenfels". Von Visebock also built various farm buildings and sold the castle including the associated lands to the city of Oberehnheim . It is documented that it was used until 1599, and it is probable that Kagenfels Castle will finally be abandoned during the Thirty Years' War .

The current ruin was only identified as Kagenfels Castle in 1828. It belongs to a group of nine castles in an area of a few square kilometers around the Odilienberg , including Birkenfels , Dreistein and Hagelschloss . The complex has been archaeologically researched since 1999 and partially reconstructed using found architectural parts.
