The Schwarzenbourg Castle (French Château de Schwarzenbourg ) is the ruin of a hilltop castle near Griesbach-au-Val in the Haut-Rhin department in Alsace . It stands at 540 meters above the Münstertal .

history

The castle was first mentioned in 1261. Presumably, Walter von Geroldseck (Gauthier de Geroldseck), the Bishop of Strasbourg , ordered the construction in the Basel area of influence in order to assert himself against the Münster Abbey . After the Battle of Hausbergen in 1262, the castle became the property of the Bishop of Basel . 1293 was the reigning since 1282 mayor of Colmar , Walter ROSSELMANN, in keep imprisoned and died there the following year. In 1301 Johann von Wartenfels took over the castle as castellan , followed in 1341 by the Münch von Landskron - both vassals of the diocese of Basel . In 1402 Schwarzenbourg Castle was in the hands of the Beger von Geispolsheim , who renovated the castle in 1479. Until the family died out in 1532, there were several clashes with the Münster Abbey, for example in 1435 and 1522. During the Thirty Years War , the castle grounds were occupied by French troops from 1633 to 1636, followed by the Württemberg army in 1651 . During the First World War , the German artillery used the ruins as an observation post and built a log house in it .

description

The “block house” from the First World War

A massive neck ditch surrounds the ruin in the south. In the southwest is the remnant of a round tower , which was connected to a second, no longer existing round tower in the south by a still clearly visible, outwardly curved wall (probably a shield wall ). In the north-west and south-east of the complex there are still substantial remains of walls, in the north there is a roundabout . In the inner courtyard there is the “block house” from the First World War, leaning against the southwest wall.
