Stockem Castle is a castle in the Belgian city of Eupen .

history

A "Herr von Stockem" is mentioned for the first time in 1172. Even then, a castle seems to have existed, but it has nothing to do with the current structure. As the center of the Stockem rule, today's castle was first mentioned in the middle of the 14th century. Over the centuries it has been rebuilt and renovated several times. By the year 1600 the entire facility had completely disintegrated.

In 1687 General Franz-Wilhelm Reichsgraf von Maigret and Eupen, Baron von Stockem was mentioned in the conquest of Buda and Pest ( Budapest ) and was congratulated by Emperor Leopold I. In 1778 a fire almost completely destroyed the outer bailey.

In its current form, the complex dates mainly from the 18th and 19th centuries. The gate construction dates from the 18th century, while the east tower dates from the 19th century. The mansion was rebuilt in 1805 by a member of the Vercken family, from whose ownership the complex passed to the Grand Ry family . Between 1917 and 1935 the castle belonged to the bank director, Baron Paul Edler von Scheibler (1876–1964). The castle has been a listed building since 1986. The dungeon of the castle until 2013-based works of art of Christian Silvain Foundation.

Not far from the castle is the Michaelskapelle , which was donated in 1727 by the then lord of the castle, Count Eugen Hoen von Cortils, and to which a small procession has made an annual pilgrimage from the Nikolauskirche since 1738 on Michaelmas day, 29 September.
