history

Dohlenstein Castle was first mentioned in 1337, but it was built earlier after the death of Přemysl Ottokar II to protect the Zittau region . The first owner was probably Heinrich von Lípa . In 1337 Vaněk inherited the castle from Wartenberg . The family held the fort until 1400, after which went manorial Tollenstein over to Hynek Berka of Duba , which is one of the richest in the then Mr. Booth was. During the Hussite Wars , the family sympathized with the Chalice Brothers , the later owner Albrecht Berka von Dubá, but then, as a staunch Catholic, was a staunch opponent of King George of Podebrady . This then also issued the order to conquer the castle. After some armed conflicts, the Saxon margraves Ernst and Albrecht bought the castle in 1471 . In 1485 it passed to Hans Georg von Schleinitz . The family then founded the village of St. Georgenthal (now Jiřetín pod Jedlovou) twenty years later .

In 1555 the owners left the castle and built a renaissance castle in the town of Rumburg . The castle has been abandoned since 1607. Its story finally ends in the Thirty Years War , when it was reoccupied by the imperial army, but captured and burned down by the Swedish General Wrangel in 1642. After that, only robber barons lived in their ruins .

During the Romantic era , interest in rebuilding the castle grew. In 1865 the innkeeper Johann Josef Münzberg built a Swiss-style inn, which was operated until 1977. It was reopened in 1996. Today the ruins are one of the most important excursion destinations in the Lusatian Mountains.
